Abstract
ACTH was administered to 29 adrenalectomizedand 7 sham-operated rats. After ACTH, the mean blood glucose of the sham-operated rats was 150.2 mg. per cent. The mean blood glucose of the adrenalectomized ACTH-treated animals at 15 minutes after injection was 93.4 mg. per cent and at 30 minutes, 77.1 mg. per cent. Mean plasma insulin levels after ACTH administration were 42.8 μU/ml. in the sham-operated animals, 125 μU/ml. at 15 minutes after injection in adrenalectomized rats, 54.3 μU/ml. at 30 minutes. It is suggested that the mechanism by which ACTH produces hypoglycemia in the adrenalectomized rat is in part related to the effect of ACTH on the pancreas in producing elevated plasma insulin levels.
