Abstract

Studies are reported on the effect of several admixtures (fly ash, water-reducing agents, mineral powder and an air-entraining agent) on the length-change anomalies present when hardened cement paste undergoes a slow cooling-warming cycle over the range 70°F to 0°F (20°C to −18°C). Porosity, as expressed by the hydration parameters, appears to be the most important parameter influencing dimensional stability during freezing of saturated pastes, regardless of the presence of admixtures.
