Abstract

Supply of adenine together with inhibitors of adenosine metabolism allowed to protect ATP in human endothelial cells, but unlike in rat endothelial cells no further increase in adenosine production was observed. Inhibition of adenosine kinase and adenosine deaminase with supply of adenine is an effective procedure to persistently increase endogenous adenosine production in the endothelium of the human heart without causing decrease in cellular ATP concentration.
