Abstract

A wide variety of polymeric additives was examined for their effects on the crystallization of calcium sulfate dihydrate from aqueous solution. Variations with polyelectrolyte charge, type, and molecular weight were examined. It was postulated that adsorbed polymer molecules acted as immobile impurities on the crystal surface, reducing the step velocity and therefore the crystal growth rate.
