Abstract

We studied the effects of the administration of a selective inhibitor of serotonin reuptake, fluoxetine, on the activity of carboxipeptidase E in brain regions and the adrenal glands of rats. The activity of the enzyme was measured using a specific inhibitor and substrate. The alteration in the activity of the enzyme depended on the brain region that was studied and the time point after the drug administration. Changes in the activity of enzymes that are involved in the metabolism of neuropeptides, such as carboxipeptidaseE, affect the contents of regulatory peptides in various brain regions. Alterations in the levels of neuropeptides in some brain regions are associated with the occurrence of depression symptoms. The alterations in the activity of enzymes may be a mechanism of regulation of the contents of biologically active peptides and thus, of the correction of this psychiatric disorder.
