Abstract

The effect of a polarizable impurity on the frequency of optical vibrations of a crystal is calculated. The impurity-lattice interaction is treated by considering the lattice polarization to be discrete. This semiclassical model facilitates the study of the effects of crystal surfaces on the optical frequencies of the crystal. The frequency shifts are calculated as a function of the distance of the impurity from the crystal surface.
