Abstract

Case reports can produce substantial educational benefits. Readers of case reports gain a deeper understanding of the topic area and key insights into specific points of diagnosis and management. Case reports also create “recognition patterns” that readers can use to identify and treat rare and unexpected conditions in their own practices. For medical students and residents, writing case reports can improve scholarly writing, sharpen observation, pattern-recognition, and hypothesis-generating skills, increase understanding of patient-centered care, and give valuable experience with peer review and the publication process. Collaborative writing with faculty co-authors can lead to strong mentoring relationships. Writing case reports can help practicing physicians to share clinical observations and insights with others, build knowledge and expertise, and contribute to the medical literature.
