Abstract

The history of African American education in the United States dates back to the first arrival of African slaves on American shores, where, according to one researcher: ... the education of the black race in the Virginia Colony was inexorably interwoven with the history of the church. The teaching of blacks by church missionaries began there in 1619, when the first twenty black indentured servants landed in Jamestown. (Holte, 1947, p. 4)
