Abstract

The chapter gives an overview of the economic development in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Germany—a period of time in which ‘German capitalism’ was established. The chapter describes the dynamic economic advance the German Kaiserreich had taken from its founding in 1871 and the profound structural changes it underwent in the following decades. At the same time, imperial Germany managed to develop successful corporate strategies, so that on the eve of the First World War the German economy was second only to the economy of the USA. While the specific economic structure as well as an extraordinary productivity remained German specialties for a long time, the chapter also detects striking parallels in the international perception of Germany then and now.
