Abstract

CLAIRE M. FAGIN, RN, PhD, FAAN, is dean and professor of the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. This article is adapted from a speech presented to the Council of Nurse Researchers at the American Nurses' Association convention in June 1982. This summary is a result of a call for papers on cost-effectiveness via The American Nurse and ANA's Council of Nurse Researchers Newsletter, in addition to a ten-year MEDLARS search. The legislative coordinating committee of ANA's Commission on Nursing Research and the Council also prepared several further summaries. For the purposes of this review, nursing research was defined as research into phenomena of interest to the nature and development of the nursing discipline, regardless of the discipline of the investigator. Due to space constraints, only a limited selection of the many studies available could be summarized here.
