Abstract

Brownfields are defined as former industrial or commercial properties that have been abandoned, idled or are no longer in use. These properties may be compromised with contaminated water and/or toxic materials. This paper demonstrates that Brownfields may however, be salvaged and redeveloped. Redeveloping brownfields has many challenges. Financial barriers and liability concerns are often cited as the main concerns, but this strategy can also have many economic, social and environmental benefits.
