This paper addresses the question of the extent to which one nuclear power station has generated economic benefits for its host economy throughout its operational stage and how far these benefits will be reversed on its closure. It does this by evaluating the employment impact of the station's operation and thence predicting the impact of closure on employment opportunities and on unemployment. A Keynesian multiplier exercise forms the basis of the predictions which relate to the Travel-to-Work Area which plays host to the power station. An essential element in the question in the effect of remoteness on economic impact and dependence. The implications of closure for planners are considered.
