Abstract

AbstractDespite the decline in freshwater eel farming, eels remain an important food resource in Japan. This study analyses economic impacts of inland water fisheries and inland aquaculture industry as the eel industry using hypothetical extraction method. As a result, if inland water fisheries were eliminated, direct economic value would be US$202 million. In the case of the inland water aquaculture industry, direct economic value was US$777 million. Additionally, indirect economic effects have affected other related industries. Thus the policies to protect eels and promote the development of full life‐cycle aquaculture are needed to sustain the eel industry and related industries.
