Abstract

SUMMARYThe distribution of fungi in a termite hill in Nigeria was studied. Twenty-seven species representing 17 genera were isolated from the four different zones of the hill. The comb insulated from the outer environment was found to differ in its species composition from the muddy layers of the hill and its outer environments. It also proved to be an excellent medium for the cultivation of many fungi. Data presented suggest a symbiotic association of termites and fungi. Some cellulolytic and keratinolytic species were isolated from the comb. Spherules were found growing in abundance on the comb, however, it was not possible to establish any further growth from these. Species of Termitomyces were not found in the 9-mo collecting period in any of the four layers of the hill.
