Abstract

The ECM Mark II, a highly secure electromechanical cipher machine used during and after World War II, is described and examined with a view to assessing the relevance of each of its features to its security A cryptanalytic attack on the machine is outlined, which, however, requires the availability of a large number of identically-keyed messages.
