Abstract
An observer of the social system in Eastern Europe writes in Monthly Review (April 1975, p. 35) that it is "a society of a new type which dialectically negates capitalism and any other socio-structural mechanism regulated by the institution of private property in the means of production. This society is what Marx would have called a new social formation." In the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, explains the observer, there is neither capitalist nor communist society, nor a transitional form between them.
