Abstract
Summary The numerical values of several of the higher harmonics in the Earth's gravitational potential have been obtained from the perturbations to the orbits of satellites. This paper describes the relevant methods, cursorily reviews previous results, and gives details of a fresh determination of the second, fourth and sixth harmonics from the orbits of Sputnik 2, Vanguard I and Explorer 7.
