Jiang, Z. ; Leung, K. -C. ; Shen, L. Abstract Over 2000 photoelectric observations in yellow were secured with the 60-cm reflecting telescope at Beijing Observatory for the system AW Lac. A new period has been obtained by employing a least-squares solution to the existing times of minima. The (O - C) values of the times of minima tend to suggest that the period may be constant within the last fifty years. A classical Russell-Merrill solution was obtained, but the fit to the observations was poor. Subsequently, a photometric solution by the method of Wilson and Devinney was derived. This solution gives a contact configuration with about 70 percent of overcontact. The solution also fits the observations very well. The mass ratio found is about unity. The system has an uncertain spectral type, estimated as B2. Unfortunately, there is no radial velocity study on AW Lac, but its location on a spectral type-period diagram suggests that this system might be a zero-age contact. The mass ratios of early-type zero-age contact systems are important, and could be used to evaluate theoretical contact models.
