Abstract
In this chapter the authors begin by exploring the forces that shaped the Sandžak region during the early Ottoman period, the emergence of Novi Pazar as a major Ottoman trading post, greater levels of urbanisation and the question of Islamicisation in the Balkan region. The chapter concludes with an analysis of the onset of Ottoman decline and the rising tensions in their relationship with the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the subsequent Candian War.
