Abstract

The Alfalfa snout beetle, Brachyrhinus ligustici , is an introduced pest which probably came about forty years ago from central Europe where it is widely distributed, but was not much of a problem in this country until alfalfa growing became extensive within the past few years. it was discovered about 1933 to be feeding on alfalfa near Oswego, New York. The adult is wingless, which probably accounts for the fact that it has spread so slowly and is confined to a comparatively small area around Oswego (Palm, 1935). However, it develops in very large numbers in small restricted areas and does serious damage to alfalfa.
