Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to stress the importance of the early discovery of deficiencies of hearing in children by accurate methods recently made available, which make possible the more effective treatment of diseases of the ear resulting in defective hearing. Otology has kept pace with other medical specialties in productive research, pathology, diagnosis and improved technic in the surgical treatment of complications involving the middle ear. Achievement in the prevention of deafness, however, when compared with accomplishment in other fields of preventive medicine, leaves much to be desired. Both the medical profession and the public have largely failed to appreciate the importance and magnitude of the problem of conserving the hearing, on which the individual to a great extent is dependent for his normal intellectual development, for the acquisition of speech and for maintaining his economic and social security.
