Abstract

I have recently seen a copy of the first edition of the earliest known English gardening book, the treatise by Thomas Hill. This copy, originally in the possession of John Ferguson (1837-1916), some-time Regius Professor of Chemistry at Glasgow, bears on the inside of the cover the arms of Lord Amherst ofHackney. Since 1921 it has been in the Library of the University ofGlasgow. It does not appear that recent students of gardening books have been aware of this copy at Glasgow, and it seems that no other copy of the first edition is recorded as extant at the present day. The book is bound up with three other treatises. The title reads :
