Abstract

I derive a new formula (generalizing the Müller–Bethe–Schwinger–Casimir formula) for the shift of complex resonance frequency of an electromagnetic cavity due to strong variations of the complex dielectric function in a thin layer near an ideally conducting wall. This formula is used to predict a photon generation rate in recently proposed experiments on the dynamical Casimir effect.
