Abstract

The re-orientation of the Jahn-Teller distortion of the C-N bond in diamond containing substitutional nitrogen was observed, through its effect on shape of the hyperfine lines of the nitrogen electron spin resonance spectrum, in the range 600-1230°K. The weak satellite lines due to 13C disappeared at about 680°K. At 900°K the abnormal broadening of the nitrogen lines in synthetic diamonds disappeared, as also did the broad ferromagnetic background line. All these processes were found to be reversible.
