Abstract

The article presents the results of the original study on the little-studied issues of the eff ects of smoking cessation on the parameters of the microvasculature (MCB) in patients with arterial hypertension (AH). A total of 94 patients with hypertension with diff erent smoking status (previously smoked, smokers, non-smokers) were examined, and microcirculation was studied in all of them with the direct method of conjunctival video biomicroscopy (CVBM). The positive eff ect of smoking cessation on the MCB parameters involved in the pathogenesis of AH (average diamiter of arterioles, arterialvenular ratio, and number of capillaries per 1 mm2 of conjunctiva surface). We have revealed that the parameter changed by smoking begin to restore back to normal in the fi rst two years after smoking cessation. Revealed correlations between smoking status and AH level in fi nal diagnoses and MCB parameters allow the authors recommending smoking cessation as an eff ective therapeutic measure.
