Abstract

This paper analyses the duration of Invalidity Benefit claims in Great Britain among men and women. The Cox proportional hazard model is used to estimate the effect of personal characteristics and economic factors on the claimants' probability of leaving the benefit. On the whole, similar results were obtained for the male and female models, although labour market-related factors appear to have a stronger effect on the length of male claims. Women are also likely to have shorter claims than men. Age and benefit level, in particular, emerged as having a significant effect on the duration of claims by both groups, with higher values for these variables being associated with longer claims.
