Abstract

This chapter focuses on how the “O”-side of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology has been applied in organizations during the 20th century. These tales range from the familiar (e.g., Hawthorne Works) to the now obscure (e.g., Non-Linear Systems), and include such luminaries as Fritz Roethlisberger, Kurt Lewin, Rensis Likert, Douglas McGregor, Frederick Herzberg, and Abraham Maslow. Other chapters in this book cover the history of research and theory in core organizational areas, so theory and research are not the focus of this chapter. Nevertheless, much of the hard-nosed theory in organizational psychology was either inspired by or directly developed by the people engaged in the interventions described herein.
