Abstract

The chapter provides an introduction to the Dual-Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM, Stroebe & Schut, 1999), with a description of two cardinal stressors and ways of coping with bereavement, the importance of coping flexibility (oscillation) and their relationships with attachment styles. It also outlines where difficulties can arise for the bereaved person and stresses the importance of therapeutic presence, attitudes, and relationship to facilitate acceptance, freedom of choice, and flexibility in grief processes and thus personal development.
