Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the major driving forces dominating energy efficiency of industrial sectors in China. The results show that the energy intensity effect is the major driving force for improving the energy efficiency of the whole industrial sectors. Before 2002, the reduction of energy consumption was the major driving force for improving the energy efficiency of the whole industrial sectors. During the “11th Five-Year Plan” and the “12th Five-Year Plan” periods, the economic structure effect gradually increased, and the compulsory energy conservation policies complemented with economic structure adjustment have effectively improved the energy efficiency of the whole industrial sectors, especially on the energy-intensive industries.
