One day Cole is strangely altered after following a creature on the subway tracks; it turns out the creature was a Chimerath, which feeds on "brightness," and which has drawn his avatar into the Dreamway on the way to the Nightmare Line. It's up to Stella, with the help of a trash-talking mouse, to save him and to face her fears in both the real world and the in the Dreamway. While there's some contrivance in the fantasy elements' relationship to the twins' real-life problems, the writing is accessible and the adventure is exciting, with a number of twists and turns that pull the reader from one reality to the next. It's fear that opened the door to the Dreamway, and readers will appreciate Stella's willingness to overcome it to save her brother.
