Abstract

Among the most beautiful and intriguing em81 bellishments of the Latin liturgy in the Middle Ages are the numerous chants in Greek that are copied in Greek or Latin script in many Western manuscripts. Figuring prominently among these are the Doxa en ipsistis theo (Gloria in excelsis), Pisteuo eis ena theon (the Latin Credo in unum Deum), Agios, agios, agios (the Sanctus), and O amnos tu theu (the Agnus Dei). These are, of course, Greek settings of the Ordinary of the Roman Mass, often referred to collectively in the literature as the Missa graeca.'
