Abstract
Like sand from the beach, medical research gets into all sorts of strange places. The recent furore over the legal status of cannabis is a case in point. What started out as a policing measure, designed to reduce the burden on officers of policing the consumption of a drug that, while still illegal, would no longer carry such severe sanctions for possession, ended up as a major health scare that could still lead to a very significant change in the direction of government policy.
