Abstract

ABSTRACT Russia's 2014-20 Donbas campaign effectively accomplished its assigned military objectives. Yet, this success is often lost because the discussion tails off into discussions on the Gerasimov doctrine, hybrid warfare, or critiques of policy and strategy. However, an operational level analysis contends that Russia effectively used irregular warfare, by linking proxy-Russian forces, to wage a manufactured insurgency to bring Kyiv to the bargaining table. In doing so, several themes emerged – conventional forces are important in irregular warfare, basing locations are often collateral damage in conflict zones, and decisiveness has returned to the battlefield.
