Abstract

The number of doctor of nursing practice (DNP) programs and graduates are presently on the rise; therefore, an increased number of master of science in nursing–prepared nurses are transitioning into the DNP role. Successful role assimilation for the DNP graduate is challenging because of internal and external factors such as role strain. Implementing strategies to facilitate role assimilation during the transition period is essential. Strategies include using a framework for DNP practice, understanding competency development and role transition, becoming involved in an effective mentoring relationship, using an evidence-based practice model for decision making, and performing a self-assessment. By engaging in these strategies, the DNP can make a smooth transition into the new role.
