Abstract

ABSTRACTDivination by the Qurʾan among Muslims dates back hundreds of years. Apart from the Middle East, it became popular among Malay Muslims as well. This article considers the divinatory role of the Qurʾan in the Malay world in general and a Malay manuscript preserved at the National Library of Malaysia, which concerns the divination of the Qurʾan in particular. Types of divination as well as the content of the manuscript along with its application and meanings are thoroughly examined. To scrutinise the nature of Malay divination, additional materials from the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Malaysia, are applied. This article thus shows one form of religio-cultural transmissions from the Middle East to the Malay world.
