Abstract
The main objective of the article is the presentation and the analysis of the short film La Main (France 1920), directed by French director Edouard-Emile Violet (1880-1955). The film is adapted from the short story La Main (1883), written by Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893). Through a comparison of the movie and its literary source, and between the definitions of the fantastic in literature and in cinema criticism, it will be possible to show the affiliation of Violet's work to (a specific) fantastic cinema. This article will also endeavor to define this genre in cinema during the Twenties: close to the fantastic genre in literature, it is also able to express itself in an independent way, developing its own characteristics, which are nethertheless coherent –in this specific case– with Maupassant’s idea of the fantastic.
