Jones, E. M. Abstract Counts of supernova remnants are used to derive the supernova rate, average remnant evolution, and probability that a remnant encounters a hot low-density tunnel in the interstellar medium. The results suggest that tunnels occupy about 80 per cent of the galactic volume. It is also found that the remnants in the inner parts of the Galaxy may be in a later stage of evolution than the average remnant in the outer parts of the Galaxy.
