Abstract

We present the measurement of Xmax, the depth of the maximum of the longitudinal development of ultra high energy air showers, with the fluorescence detector of the Pierre Au ger Observatory. After giving an update on the average and fluctuations of Xmax with 80% more data than previously published, we discuss the distributions of Xmax for different energies and compare it to the predictions of air shower s imulations for different primary particles.
