Abstract

Individual vertical profiles and north-south sections for the distribution of theδ 13 C of total dissolved inorganic carbon are presented for the Atlantic stations of the GEOSECS program. In most cases theδ 13 C data parallel the distribution of dissolved O 2. Differences are attributed to in-situ oxidation of organic matter and dissolution of particles of CaCO 3. Antarctic Bottom and Intermediate Waters have aδ 13 C value of near 0.5‰ relative to the PDB isotopic standard. The lowest values in the Atlantic ocean were found in the Antarctic Circumpolar waters which haveδ 13 C values as low as 0.2‰. The core of the North Atlantic Deep Water has aδ 13 C value of 1.0‰.
