Abstract

A review of the distribution, habitat and status of the smoky mouse Pseudomys fumeus is presented. The species is endemic and widespread in Victoria but its distribution has been drastically reduced from the former range as indicated by subfossils. It inhabits heathy open-forest and heath in the ranges and on Quaternary sands in coastal east Gippsland. Population densities are low at all sites.
