Abstract

Rat-trapping operations on Mona Island, West Indies, indicate the only species present on the island is the roof rat, Rattus rattus. In a one-year period, 237 specimens were collected; 71 rats were marked and released; 41 (57.7 per cent) were recovered at least once. Forty of the marked rats were released in areas other than where captured. The recovery in this group was 16 (33.3 per cent). The rate of recovery of the rats liberated where they were originally captured was almost 85 per cent.
