Abstract

The dispersion of colored organic pigments in aqueous media is important in graphic arts, paints and coatings. Restraints on the release of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) into the atmosphere have compelled these industries to adopt waterborne vehicles. In addition existing or pending regulations on the use of, and disposal of pigmented products containing heavy metals can require the use of more expensive organic pigments. Consequently, pigment dispersant manufacturers must refine the polymers used to disperse colored, organic pigments to obtain higher efficiency and performance. Therefore, the design of polymers as a grinding vehicle specially for organic pigments is presented. Results demonstrate that the waterborne organic pigment dispersions can be prepared for high quality printing and coating formulations.
