Abstract

In a recent article in this journal, John Short claims to have discerned a new urban order from a focus upon the redevelopment of the London Docklands. This commentary takes issue with Short's treatment of three facets of the emerging urban reality: his presentation of social restructuring; the analysis of a changing urban meaning; and his account of the conflict over redevelopment. It points to the fact that these issues are more complex than Short's superficial analysis indicates.
