Abstract
This article describes our technique for dealing with a dislodged tracheostomy tube. Ideal care should focus on prevention of a dislodged tube and many articles describe techniques that are helpful in prevention. Despite the best efforts, a dislodged tracheostomy tube can create an airway emergency. The visualization of the tracheostomy site without proper instruments, lighting, and suction can be difficult or impossible. Palpation of the site can be a guide to help reinsert the tracheostomy tube and to control the airway. This article describes a simple technique for “fingertip” palpation of the tracheostomy site.
