Abstract

Single layer household gloss paints of nine different British Standard colours from fifteen manufacturers have been tested using twelve different reagents. The reagents acetone, chloroform, concentrated sulphuric acid, and concentrated nitric acid, in combination, discriminated between many paints of the same BS colour. Dimethylformamide, dichlorobenzene and 0.2M alcoholic sodium hydroxide were useful for resolving some of the remaining undifferentiated pairings.
