Abstract

ABSTRACTA new popular form of political debate has appeared in the meme, a simple, repeatable and ephemeral medium that mixes images and words to pass on information. This form has become extremely helpful for regressive and reactionary politics, as right‐leaning groups now use the meme to spread misinformation and disinformation to their supporters. This paper discusses the meme's use in the spread of willful disinformation in online spaces around the Black Lives Matter movement through humor, false information and appropriation of talking points.
