Abstract

The influence of acidity and temperature on the reaction of two-coordinate silver complexes with N2H4 has been studied. The N2(F)% which represents the percentage of N2 formed by the four-electron oxidation of N2H4 [Reaction (A)] was greatly increased by the presence of a trace of CuII ion in the system. The N2(F)% was also enhanced by increasing the pH and temperature in the absence of CuII ion. In addition, the N2(F)% was linearly related to log β2 for the silver complexes. The log of the N2(O)% which represents the percentage of N2 formed by the one-electron oxidation of N2H4 [Reaction (B)] was linearly related to the 1/logβ2 value in the presence of CuII ions.
