Abstract

The apparent sidereal variation in the intensity of muons generated by cosmic rays with energies greater than 1011 eV showed a marked change in phase at Northern Hemisphere stations at the time of the recent reversal in sign of the general solar magnetic field. No corresponding change was observed at rather lower energies at Hobart, Tasmania. By adopting a particular model of the large scale interplanetary field, it is possible to account for this behaviour of the sidereal variation in terms of a primary cosmic ray anisotropy which is related to the local direction of the galactic magnetic field.
