Abstract

The direct thermal effect of refrigerant R-134A (1, 1, 1, 2-tetrafluoroethane) has been evaluated using a one-dimensional radiative-convective model of the atmosphere. The surface temperature increase from a uniform 1 ppbv distribution of R-134A was calculated to be less than 0.04 K, as compared to 0.14 K for 1 ppbv of R-12. Using recent extimates (Anderson L., 1981, Atmospheric Environment 15, 1579–1582) of 0.1 ppbv for the worst case ground level concentration of R-134A, our results give a temperature increase from direct thermal heating of 0.004 K, about an order of magnitude less than that from R-12.
