Abstract

Chaoborid midges are an important component of the profundal bottom fauna in many of the world's lakes and reservoirs. As a result of their prevalence, many studies and observations have concerned these organisms (See Cook 1963 for review). Of especial interest to aquatic biologists over the years has been the behavioral characteristic exhibited by the older midge larvae of migrating from the bottom mud, where they spend the day, to the open water at night. Since this movement is coincidental with day and night, the obvious conclusion has been reached that the larvae are negatively phototactic (Berg 1937, Wood 1956).
